Writing From Life — August 2015
Laura's life experiences and scholarly expertise in history and literature blend into her award-winning articles, oftentimes setting the tone and personalities written into the lives of some of her imaginary characters. Her most recent novel, Return in Kind, is just one example of fiction framed in the landscape of southern Vermont.
Her article, Literary Ladders in the Golden Age of Children's Books was published in The Sewanee Review (2011) and received the Walter Sullivan Prize for achievement in the criticism of fiction. It puts the great burst of children's literature in the 1890s (Kipling, Grahame, Nesbit, Burnett, Beatrix Potter) into the larger context of publishing trends, and has been re-printed many times.
The more personal, Memory, Music and Cochlear Implant was originally published in The Seneca Review (Fall 2009/Spring 2010); also frequently re-printed.
