  • Sundog Poetry Center

    Located in the northern Green Mountains of Vermont, Sundog Poetry Center, Inc. offers events, publishing, retreats, and workshops related to poetry. As a 501c3 charitable organization. Their mission is to promote poetry as necessary to the enrichment of our cultural lives, support poets in their work and create audiences for their poetry, and provide ways to share poetry throughout the Vermont community.

    Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts

    MGFA is intimately involved in several nonprofit arts organizations including the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, The River Gallery School of Art, Windham Art Gallery, and Brattleboro West Arts. Author events are held in the gallery.

    Vermont Authors Project

    A non-profit organization created to help professional and emerging Vermont authors in the rapidly changing worlds of publishing, distribution, marketing, rights, digital formats, and social media through dialogue and education.

    The Burlington Writers Workshop

    The Burlington Writers Workshop’s mission is to provide writers with free learning opportunities that help them develop as artists and professional writers. They run as many as five workshops each week in Burlington, Vermont, and host occasional panel discussions, readings, and opportunities to connect with experienced, professional writers for advice and encouragement. To ensure access for all, everything is free of charge. (BWW also operates in Middlebury and Montpelier.)

    Poetry Society Of New Hampshire

    A non-profit membership organization that promotes poetry through the publication of books, a magazine, The Poets Touchstone, open mics, workshops, contests, a monthly calendar of events, collaborations with other artists, and assisting the Governor in selecting the state Poet Laureate. They have sponsored or supported events in libraries, art galleries, parks, theaters, and on the radio, and welcome all poets and lovers of poetry.

    Poetry Society Of Vermont

    The Poetry Society of Vermont welcomes new members, both writers and appreciative readers. Founded in 1947, PSOV is an association of poets and supporters who join in promoting an interest in poetry through meetings, workshops, readings, contests, and contributions to the society's journal, The Mountain Troubadour, which has been published since at least 1956. Anyone may join the society including high school and college students and non-residents of Vermont.

    Brattleboro Literary Festival

    The Brattleboro Literary Festival was founded in 2002 by a very small group of bibliophiles from area bookstores and libraries. The very first festival featured Nobel Prize winning legend Saul Bellow in his last public appearance. Since then the festival has gone on to present over 400 authors, including winners of the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, National Book Critics Circle Award, Newbery Medal, and the Caldecott Medal.

    Burlington Book Festival

    A three-day festival based in a variety of downtown venues and featuring literary luminaries, both local and from around the world.

    American Life In Poetry / Ted Kooser, Poet Laureate Of US (2004-2006)

    American Life in Poetry provides newspapers and online publications with a free weekly column featuring contemporary American poems. The sole mission of this project is to promote poetry: American Life in Poetry seeks to create a vigorous presence for poetry in our culture.

    League Of Vermont Writers

    The League of Vermont Writers is a friendly and down-to-earth community of writers—both emerging and seasoned—from around the entire state and beyond. They are the oldest writing organization in Vermont and a safe space for digging in with others who delight in the written word, offering support and encouragement, networking opportunities, craft, and professional development. LVW is member-driven and guided by a board of directors consisting of volunteer members voted upon by the general membership. They are also a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization. You do not need to be published to join.

    The Writer’s Center Of White River Junction

    The Writer's Center of White River Junction is for serious writers and nervous beginners. It’s for procrastinators who could benefit from regular deadlines – and for the prolific who could benefit from quality feedback. It’s for anyone with a manuscript hidden in a drawer, or a life story or poem waiting to be written. It’s for people who don’t know where to start or how to end. And for writers who are doing just fine on their own, but would like the company of other writers.

    Vermont Arts Council / Poetry Out Loud

    Poetry Out Loud is a national competition for high-schoolers created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The program provides pathways for students to explore, memorize, and recite great works of poetry.

    Pen Central

    The Seacoast’s (Portsmouth/Kittery) hub for writing workshops, tutorials, consultations, editing, and readings, dedicated to nurturing beginning, practicing, and established writers. Their fiction, memoir, and poetry workshops offer a community for learning, inspiration, and mutual support. Pen Central writers come from all walks of life, to explore a desire to write, hone their craft, and revise for publication.

    New Hampshire Writers' Project

    A 501(c)(3) nonprofit literary arts organization that nurtures the writer’s passion and the development of the written word by providing resources to develop and enhance craft, educate regarding publication and distribution, and foster an interactive group of creative individuals. NHWP believes in the power of writing to inform, inspire, entertain, and transform both readers and writers. It is funded by its members as well as organizations and businesses who support New Hampshire’s writers and literary heritage.

    Straw Dog Writers Guild

    The mission of Straw Dog Writers Guild is to support the writing community by strengthening, engaging and connecting writers at all levels of development. They are a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the craft and transformative power of writing, designed to serve writers throughout the region by promoting individual growth, community outreach, and enrichment and community building.

    Mass Poetry

    Mass Poetry believes that words matter. They support poets and poetry in Massachusetts, help to broaden the audience of poetry readers, bring poetry to readers of all ages, and transform people’s lives through inspiring verse.

    Poetry In America

    In partnership with Harvard, Poetry in America offers free online courses for global learners as well as for-credit and professional development courses for undergraduates, graduate students and educational practitioners. The public television series, Poetry in America (presented by WGBH Boston and distributed by American Public Television) is being broadcast nationwide.

    Boston Area Small Press And Poetry Scene

    The New England Poetry Club

    NEPC is a poets’ association founded in 1915 by Amy Lowell, Robert Frost, and Conrad Aiken to foster the art of poetic expression. They run the oldest poetry reading series in the country, and offer an ongoing writing workshop open to all members. They sponsor awards and contests to encourage and recognize poetic achievement, and look for new creative ways to foster understanding and love of poetry. Members of New England Poetry Club are poets, publishers, and readers and translators of poetry, who live in New England or have strong ties to the region.

    The Frost Place

    The Frost Place is a nonprofit educational center for poetry and the arts based at Robert Frost’s old homestead, which is owned by the town of Franconia, New Hampshire

    The Robert Frost Stone House Museum is a literary landmark located only minutes away from Frost's gravesite in Old Bennington.

    CreativeGround

    Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance

    Founded in 1975, the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance is a membership-driven nonprofit organization that works to enrich the literary life and culture of Maine. The MWPA is the only statewide organization solely devoted to supporting and promoting Maine’s writers, publishers, booksellers, and literary professionals. Their goals include: promoting an appreciation of Maine literature, creating a network of writers, readers, and publishers, creating opportunities for writers to improve writing and marketing skills, and informing members and the public of Maine literary and publishing news.

    Green Mountain Writers Conference

    The Green Mountain Writers Conference started subversively as an effort to create a gathering of writers that would be as encouraging to new or inexperienced writers as it would be useful to those who had succeeded in publishing stories, novels, nonfiction work, and poems.

    Potato Hill Poetry

    Potato Hill Poetry seeks to ignite a passion for poetry in schools across the country. It is devoted to the excitement and power of word and sound and rhythm and the possibilities created when they come together. Potato Hill Poetry is an organization dedicated to the proposition that poetry belongs to us all.

    Children’s Literacy Foundation

    CLiF has provided free and inspiring literacy programs and brand-new books to low-income, at-risk, and rural children up to age 12 in almost 85% of the communities in New Hampshire and Vermont. Their fun, interactive literacy programs benefit children from many backgrounds, all of whom are at risk of growing up with low literacy skills.

    Peterborough Poetry Project

    A not-for-profit project started by Bill Chatfield in January 2019 to promote poetry in Peterborough, NH and beyond. They organized and rejuvenated the Peterborough Book Fair, have run three contests so far, and have published two collections of poetry.

    IndieBound

    A network of independent bookstores that share book recommendations and connect readers to their next favorite. They also run the monthly Indie Next List, which compiles recommendations from indies nationwide.

    An independent, Vermont-based publishing company dedicated to spreading environmental awareness and social justice by publishing authors who promulgate messages of hope and renewal through place-based writing and environmental activism. They are committed to preserving and protecting the natural resources of the earth. To that end, a percentage of their proceeds is donated to environmental activist groups and social justice organizations.

    Slate Roof Press

    Slate Roof Press is member-run and committed to publishing new voices in poetry in limited-edition, art-quality chapbooks, focusing on Massachusetts and regional poets. Members are involved with all aspects of publishing from vetting manuscripts to book assembly. Each poet works closely with master printer, Ed Rayher, to create physical books that feature special papers, letterpress covers, and local artwork.     Maine Authors Publishing & Cooperative

    A cooperative-style publisher helping independent authors get their books published and in the hands of their readers. They provide all an author needs to print, promote, and distribute locally, affordably, and effectively. Their services include editing, design, printing, distribution, and marketing.

    Folded Word

    An all-volunteer press dedicated to exploring the world, one voice at a time. They publish chapbook-length manuscripts of poetry, fiction, and literary essays. They also publish single poems, short stories, and essays on this blog.

  • The Fictional Cafe

    A virtual coffee shop and literary magazine founded in 2013, created especially for writers and artists. Join their Coffee Club, a diverse online community of writers, artists, and audio artists. They publish prose, poetry, fine art, photography, and podcasts from their members along with news, reviews, and interviews. Their first print anthology, containing handpicked work from the first five years of their publication, was published in 2019.

    Mud Season Review

    An international literary journal run by members of the Burlington Writers Workshop.

    The Cafe Review

    A Maine-based quarterly journal of art, poetry and reviews that has been running for over 25 years. Founded by former Poet Laureate of Portland, Maine, Steve Luttrell. He is also the Publishing Editor.

    Hunger Mountain

    Fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, visual art, young adult and children’s writing, and literary miscellany published by Vermont College of Fine Arts. Its print issue comes out annually in the spring, and online content changes on a regular basis.

    New England Review

    By publishing new fiction, poetry, and nonfiction that is both challenging and inviting, New England Review encourages artistic exchange and thought-provoking innovation, providing publishing opportunities for writers at all stages in their careers. NER was founded by poets Sydney Lea and Jay Parini in New Hampshire in 1978.

    Vermont Literary Review

    The first issue of Vermont Literary Review was published in 1994. The review is published once a year and includes poetry, fiction, drama, and personal essays from and about New England.

    Green Mountains Review

    Green Mountains Review, based at Northern Vermont University, is an award-winning literary magazine publishing poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, literary essays, interviews, and book reviews by both well-known writers and promising newcomers.
